Check out our top 9 concerts in Vancouver May 2016. Concert season is heating up in Vancouver. A lot of great acts are coming through the city. A few are already sold out. I’m really looking forward to three absolute showmen: Har Mar Superstar, Charles Bradley, and Mac Demarco. Those guys are just scratching the surface of a very solid month of music. April 6, Har Mar Superstar at the Cobalt

Looking through the concert calendar, Har Mar stood out by his name alone. I Googled him and as soon as I saw the image results in the top right of the page I was sold. I then checked out Har Mar Superstar’s music and I was sold again. Start May off with some naked showmanship. Opening for the Superstar is local band WISHKICKER, check out their debut EP on Cherry Tapes.

May 9, Mayer Hawthorne at the Imperial

Take a look at that tasty vinyl in the video. Listen to the sweet stylings of Mayer Hawthorne. May starts out soulful; you won’t hear me complaining about that.

May 14, Damien Jurado and The Heavy Light at the Biltmore

Two lines in to his NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert performance, I could sense how strong of a song writer Damien was. Every song made me feel the same way. I’m interested to see him with his backing band, The Heavy Light. It will be a nice change from the toned down acoustic performance above.

May 20, Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires at the Commodore

If you haven’t already, (even if you have) do whatever you can get your hands on some tickets to see Charles Bradley perform. Perform might not be a strong enough verb. This man puts his entire heart and soul in to his performances. What I say won’t do him justice. Believe me – you won’t be let down.

May 23, Brian Jonestown Massace at the Commodore

Brian Jonestown Massacre come highly recommended by a friend. The last time they were in Vancouver a bottle was thrown on stage and they walked off. They’re back, how will the show go this time? You don’t wanna miss it.

May 26, Matt Corby at the Commodore

Matt Corby is BIG in Australia. His EP went 6x platinum. He won song of the year twice. He is coming off a sold out tour. It’s translating well to North America. He is playing to a sold out crowd in Vancouver later this month. If you can find tickets, check him out.

May 27, Mac Demarco at Malkin Bowl

I’ve seen Mac Demarco enough to know what to expect. The pepperoni playboy always puts on a good show to rowdy fans. The first outdoor show of the year will be a good one.

May 27, La Luz at the Biltmore

People had nothing but positive things to say as I read through the Youtube comments – even in Spanish. The all girl surf rock band from Seattle is hopping over the border to play some groovy tunes to their brothers and sisters in the north.

May 28, Alabama Shakes w/ Kurt Vile and the Violators at Deer Lake Park

Last and certainly not least is Britney Howard and the Alabama Shakes. End your month off right with their show in Burnaby. I’ll admit I was late on discovering the band but as soon as I heard their SNL performance I knew. Oh yea, Kurt Vile is opening for them… Not suprisingly, this was a hot ticket that sold out early. I hope you can get lucky and a couple tickets for cheap.
