June 8, dvsn at the Fortune Sound Club
Kicking things off in our roundup of Concerts in Vancouver June 2016 is dvsn, the Toronto twosome. The pair are playing their first headlining tour in support of their debut album, Sept. 5. Singer Daniel Daley and record producer Nineteen85 fit right in to the new Toronto sound, it’s no surprise they are signed to OVO. Watch them kick off a month of great R&B in Van City.

Next up on our list of concerts is Gang Signs w/ Mu. It was Gang Signs’ logo that first drew my attention. The Vancouver locals are returning home to play Fortune. It’s the second stop on a 6-city summer tour across Canada. Lead singer and rennaisance man, Peter Ricq, is fresh off the release of his graphic novel, Once Our Land. Playing in support is Vancouver two-piece, Mu.

June 18, Levitation Vancouver Saturday at Imperial with Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, Charlotte Day Wilson, Dada Plan and Nina Mendoza at the Imperial
The first half of June was relatively quiet in Vancouver on the live music front. Levitation Vancouver kicks off the second half of the month. In my opinion, the Saturday night lineup is the best of their night shows. This showcase is stacked. Thundercat alone would make this a must see. Add Charlotte Day Wilson, a newcomer from Toronto, to the mix and you’ve got the makings for a great night of live music.

June 20, JMSN w/ Snoh Aalegra at the Alexander Gastown
Moving right along to what I consider the best show of the month. This is the one I’ve had marked on my calendar. “Most Of All” has been on repeat since I first heard it. JMSN is touring in support of his new album, It Is. Come through the Alexander to hear some of the new wave of R&B. And oh yea, Snoh Aalegra makes this show a double shot of awesome.

June 23, Toots and the Maytals at the Commodore Ballroom
Toots and the Maytals are bringing reggae straight from Kingston, Jamaica to Vancouver. The Toots Hibbert led band plays feel good music for the summer time. Their stop in Vancouver is perfectly timed. Listen to a few of their songs and you’ll realize they don’t have too many stinkers. Their music makes me smile. Make sure you’ve got some green leafs for this one.

June 25, Chastity Belt at the Fortune Sound Club
There will never be enough all girl rock bands. I haven’t found one I don’t like. The Seattle rockers are coming north for a tour date in late June. Their Facebook about page has some great info on the band including their awards and their influences, you gotta check that info out. You can see the ladies sing about female empowerment on June 25 at Fortune.

June 26, Ms. Lauryn Hill at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre
Wrapping up the month is the one and only Ms. Lauryn Hill. She is coming to Vancouver as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Whatever the reason, I can’t wait for this one. The elusive MC is arguably the best female to ever bless the mic. It’s a once in a life time opportunity to witness a legend – I’m expecting some greatness.
